Training session takes DMACC students from textbook to real life
DMACC tool and die students visited the Co-Line press department after hours as part of their curriculum on Tuesday, Jan. 26. Eric Leonard, Anson Walker, and Dave Hobbs all stayed late to demonstrate the functions and features of a stamping press. A total of 16 students and two instructors came with questions and open minds to get hands-on experience about what they are learning in class.

Tool and die instructor John Neumayer said that his intent, which has proven valuable, “is for a prospective student and parents visiting the campus to see a variety of businesses statewide that have opportunities for graduates to find job placement. The family can relate to the businesses that reside in small towns and for the student whose desire is to stay close to home or doesn’t relate to the large metropolitan area.”
The relationship that is being built between DMACC and Co-Line is an important investment for both sides. Dave Hobbs is a member of the Advisory Board, which helps steer the curriculum and ensure that it matches today’s business and manufacturing standards. Drew Morgan, Co-Line’s newest tool and die maker, is an example of how a part-time internship can be advantageous to both student and employer, as that internship turned into a full-time position.
Having contact with the students through tours and visits to the schools as well as contact with instructors helps students be aware of their employment options as they finish up their studies. Co-Line is committed to continue these types of relationships to help share how technology is constantly changing and make students aware of rewarding career opportunities right here in rural Iowa.
