Three wins in a row for Brand and crew!
The location and weather conditions were different, but one thing was the same for the Co-Line/Goalsetter sponsored Alcohol Funny Car Team, another trip to the winner’s circle. Dale Brand and crew competed last weekend June 20-21 in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, South Central Division event at Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park and brought home their third wally (trophy) of the year, their third in a row.
In qualifying, the hot and humid conditions were present, but crew chief Eric Brand had the tune up to lead the team to a second qualifying spot with a 5.628, just eight thousandths behind Annie Whitley in the number one spot. (took out six car sentence.)
Brand faced fellow Iowan Kirk Williams, last year’s Division 5 champion, in the first round of competition. The two had almost identical reaction times. Williams got out of the grove and Brand took the win at 257.19 mph in 5.659 seconds to Williams’ losing 5.864 at 245.09 mph.
In round two, Brand faced Shane Westerfield of Anaheim, CA who finished number three in the nation last year. Westerfield was out of the gate first, but the Goalsetter sponsored car chased him down at about the 330 foot mark. Brand clocked a 5.653 at 257.43 mph to Westerfield’s losing 5.722 at 252.33 mph.
In a very late final round appearance at 10:15 p.m., Brand face Whiteley of Grand Junction, CO, who finished fourth in the nation last year and is a pre-season pick for the national championship this year. Whiteley runnered-up the previous week in Denver, and had won the Tulsa event last year. Brand was first off the line and never looked back resulting in a great drag race with the Goalsetter car recording a 5.613 elapsed time at 255.34 mph to Whiteley’s 5.625 at 255.77 mph. This was Brand’s fastest lap of the weekend and occurred when he needed it most, in the final round!
“The team worked flawlessly together and we didn’t hurt a thing on the car,” said a very excited Brand. “Each race was a true drag race, there were no “give me’s” this weekend, just great side-by-side drag racing. Eric tuned the car to low ET and progressively quicker each round of eliminations.”
Team members for the weekend included Dale, Tana, and Eric Brand, Marty Van Wyk, and deWayne Lemons.
The Co-Line/Goalsetter team is headed to Joliet, IL this weekend June 27-29 to compete in the JEG’s All-Star race which they won last year and to also compete in the 17th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by Super Start Batteries.
